Second Trimester: 24-13 Weeks to Go

As your nausea fades away and you have a noticeable round appearance, your baby is growing rapidly.

Baby's due in …

… 24 Weeks

Baby: By this week your unborn baby measures between 4.3 and 4.6 inches from head to buttocks and weighs almost 3 ounces (80 grams). Baby's fingernails are now well formed and the legs are longer than the arms. The fine hair that previously covered your baby's body now also covers the head.

You: Your baby is moving his arms and legs more now, and you should be feeling this movement very soon! This may be the time when your doctor will talk to you about prenatal testing.

… 23 Weeks

Baby: Your baby's fetal weight has doubled in the past two weeks and is now about 3 1/2 ounces (100 grams). The head-to-rump length of your unborn baby is between 4 1/2 and almost 5 inches. By this week, baby is about the size of your hand spread open.

You: Can you believe you're almost halfway to your due date?

… 22 Weeks

Baby: Your growing baby now measures between 5 and 5 1/2 inches from crown to rump and weighs approximately 5.25 ounces (150 grams)! Your baby's heart and circulatory system are still developing and will get oxygen from you right up until birth. Blood flows from your baby to the placenta through the umbilical cord so that your blood and baby's never mix during pregnancy.

… 21 Weeks

Baby: By this week the head-to-buttocks length of your growing baby is between 5 and 6 inches and his weight is almost 7 ounces (200 grams). Between now and delivery your baby's weight will increase more than 15 times! Baby's nervous system continues to grow and mature. The spinal cord and the front, middle, and back sections of the brain have all been established.

You: Between now and delivery your baby's weight will increase more than 15 times! Your wardrobe is starting to indicate how much your own weight has increased by this point.

… 20 Weeks

Baby: Although baby's growth rate has slowed, your baby-to-be is still growing steadily all the time. Right now your baby weighs about 9 ounces (260 grams) and measures between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 inches, from head to buttocks. Even a baby's skin goes through many changes. When a baby is born, a white substance called vernix, which protects baby's skin from amniotic fluid, covers its body.

… 19 Weeks

Baby: At the start of your second half of pregnancy, your unborn baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces (300 grams) and measures just over 7 inches from head to rump.

You: By now, your uterus is probably just about even with your navel. Your weight gain is probably between 10 and 14 pounds, and the fact that you are pregnant is clearly noticeable. As your body continues to change and grow, you may notice swelling in your legs and feet, especially by the end of the day.

… 18 Weeks

Baby: This week your growing baby measures about 7 1/2 inches from crown to rump and weighs slightly more than 12 ounces (350 grams). Also at this point, baby's eyelids and eyebrows are well developed and fingernails have grown to cover the fingertips.

… 17 Weeks

Baby: This week your baby weighs almost 1 pound! Baby’s length is about 8 inches from head to buttocks.

You: Your belly is slowly growing and you definitely have a round appearance by now. An average weight gain at this point is between 12 and 15 pounds.

… 16 Weeks

Baby: At this point, your unborn baby weighs just over 1 pound and measures almost 8 1/2 inches from crown to rump.

You: The uterus is getting more cramped and as baby grows there isn’t as much room to move around - but your baby will still try, and you’ll certainly feel it!

… 15 Weeks

Baby: This week your baby-to-be weighs around 1 1/2 pounds and measures almost 9 inches from head to rump.

You: Your uterus continues to grow upward, and at this point in your pregnancy you should be able to feel it approximately 2 inches above your navel.

… 14 Weeks

Baby: Your unborn baby now weighs almost 2 pounds! The head-to-buttocks length is just over 9 inches.

You: Your weight gain is probably between 16 and 22 pounds, and your uterus is about 2 1/2 inches above your navel.

… 13 Weeks

Baby: Your little guy can now be measured in total length, instead of from just head to buttocks. Your unborn baby's new total length is just over 15 inches and baby weighs a little more than 2 pounds now. About this time, the eyes open and your baby will continue to open and close them.

You: At 27 weeks of pregnancy, your uterus is almost 3 inches above your navel. Your doctor will probably check your weight, blood pressure, urine, the height of your uterus, swelling, and varicose veins, and the fetal size, position, and heartbeat.
